The Plant

the plant

Jatropha Curcas is a plant with a wide variety of virtues and which offers an alternative solution to the traditional fuels.
Jatropha Curcas, also named Pourghere, is an euphorbiaceae with medicinal properties that is native to the American tropics, most likely Mexico and Central America. It was introduce on the Capa Verde Islands during the 16th century by the Portugese navigators. Today, it can be found throughout the tropical world but also all around the globe.
Its optimal cultivation conditions are mainly: Altitude below 1'000 meters, in arid or semi-arid soils, in plains or hills, with temperatures between 14°C and 28°C. Eventhough it may be planted in areas with higher average temperatures. The plant adapts well in poor soil.
It produces fruits during approximately 40 years, and its own pesticide and fungicide properties allow limited pesticides use.
The pure vegetal oil may be used for green fuel production, industrial lubricant or machine oil substitutes, soap or industrial detergent, candles or varnish (after oxidation with iron hydroxides).
It is used, for instance, for the public lightning in Rio de Janeiro region, and used for power generators for many Malian local communities. It is also used as a safe and mild purgative in Portugal (Oil produced in Capa Verde).

Economic and sustainable solution

Economic and sustainable solution

Jatropha Curcas offers a broad range of benefits, in particular, presenting positive environmental balance, whether during its culture or in its uses.
The oil average yield of Jatropha Curcas is 2’000 to 3’000 litres per Hectare per year ; but much higher returns are possible with best care of the plant.
As a reminder: Yield of Rapeseed: 1’200 litres/ha/y; Sunflower: 662 litres/ha/y; Soy: 446 litres/ha/y!

If only 3% of Africa were planted with Jatropha, it would provide up to tens of billions of Euros in annual revenues, as an important energy independency.
Economically and socially, this plant, easy to cultivate and very productive, could become a key asset for many emerging and developing countries.
The Biodiesel extracted from that plant contains more oxygen, less carbon monoxide, 30 times less particles known to cause asthma, especially with the children.
